New Paintings

Amanda Vesey makes her world seem very easy to portray. Then we look at the myriad sources and the sympathy, humour and maturity of the gaze which singles out this cast list of children, youths, men in running gear, curiously stranded farmers and, of course, horses and dogs.

Sometimes the figures are marooned in their own pictorial space, or else they appear to be part of a more specific narrative. We don't have to understand any of their stories because each work is a world of its own, and the randomness is akin to our own lives, which through all sorts of media, are subjected to images from all around the globe. Vesey simply marks up the elements that have caught the attention of her shrewd, unerring eye. The result is the striking, graphically lucid and richly evocative series of paintings created for this exhibition.

This is Amanda Vesey's third solo show with Art First Projects, following a career as artist and writer of a highly successful series of children's books.
