Partou Zia was the first recipient of the Tate St Ives residency award in 2003. We are very pleased to present her work in this introductory exhibition at Art First. Persian born, but resident in Cornwall, Partou completed her Fine Art training at the University of Warwick and at the Slade School of Art in London.

The notion of telling a story plays a central role in her art. She absorbs and constantly readdresses the traditions and practises of Late Gothic and early Ranaissance paintings as well as those of Persian visual culture, especially illuminated manuscripts, with their magical, non-perspectival picture space.

The themes of lovers, readers, and dreamers, intertwine in these small, painterly works on board and canvas, to enchant us and draw us in to dream our own dream.
