Statement
Kimberley Gundle used to paint portraits of people's faces, but now focuses
on their feet, to create portraits 'below the knee'. For Kimberley, shoes
portray the mood and personality of the wearer at that moment and give a
clue to their identity. She observes people waiting in line for a bus, or on
the tube, girls in a bar and children at play. When any of them interest
her, she interviews them, takes photographs and makes drawings. Using a
bright palette with boldness and imagination, her paintings emerge, giving
fleeting glimpses of people and the lives they lead in urban environments.
