...variations in paint handling and application complicate the experience. Some layers are opaque but, elsewhere, translucent washes and and glazes allow underlying colours to seep through and adulterate the mix. Where the paint is matt, it sucks in light and seems to absorb your attention; but some areas glisten with a soft metallic sheen, which your eyes glide over as if it were slippery. Once you notice subtle differences like these, you begin to appreciate the complexity of these nuanced surfaces. These paintings have been lovingly worked and reworked–until they sing with effortless grace.
