Jake Harvey is a sculptor who carves granite, basalt, marble and limestone, imbuing the elemental stillness of stone with a Zen-like simplicity and a charged sensuality that communicates with peoples from all cultures. He places the abstract forms directly on the floor, or sometimes on shaped bases that can be set indoors or outside within a landscape.
Through drawing and photography he explores archaeological and architectural sites around the world, recording the traces of man. Often his sculptures retain the indexical mark of the maker and subtly imply an indeterminate use or function.
Between 2007 and 2011 Harvey oversaw The STONE Project, through the Edinburgh College of Art. The Milestone Carve in 2009, involved international sculptors including Atsuo Okamoto and resulted in a major publication: STONE: A Legacy and Inspiration for Art, (2011, Black Dog Publishing) to which Jessica Harrison also contributed.
